The saying goes new year, new me. Is it actually necessary to have an entirely new you? How about new year, an improved or better version of you. It doesn't have the same ring, but you get the picture. Sometimes it's the little steps you do that can add up to big progress.
For example, many folks start an extensive workout routine at the beginning of the year. If you're not someone that enjoys exercise or isn't very active it can be a difficult new year's resolution to achieve. To set yourself up for success start small. You can begin with 20 or 30-minute exercise sessions 2 or 3 days a week. Then work your way up from there by slowly increasing the days or your minutes of exercise.
Another common new year's resolution is to eat healthier. That can mean many things to different people. In general, it's about portion control, less sugar, more veggies, and drinking more water. Start small by skipping the side of fries that come with your burger. Swap sugary sodas for unsweetened tea, essence or plain water. If you're not a fan of vegetables, plenty of recipes online contain "hidden veggies" that taste amazing. Here is one of our favorites.
Self-care is another area people like to improve upon at the start of each new year. There are numerous ways to nurture your mind, body, and soul. If you lead an ultra-busy life or have financial constraints, some forms of self-care like, a weekend spa trip or an hour-long meditation session, may be out of the question. Instead, try these quick and budget-friendly alternatives for self-care:
- Soaking in a warm bath
- Take a walk on a nature trail
- Set aside 5 minutes each morning to set your daily intentions
- Give yourself a foot massage with your favorite moisturizer and essential oils
- Write down the things you're thankful for in a journal
- Create a mini spa at home and groom areas of your body that you've neglected, maybe it's time for a pedicure, facial, or a deep conditioning treatment
You don't have to spend a lot of time or money to make yourself feel like a million bucks.
The key to achieving your new year's resolutions is by starting small. The examples above show little actions you can take everyday that will make a big difference over time. It doesn't need to be January 1st for you to change your life. You can start right now!
